On 6 December 2011, AFNIC the Registry for the .fr extension extended eligibility to register .fr domain names to residents and legal entities throughout the European Union. Previously domain holders needed a local presence to be able to register .fr names.
 
This hugely popular TLD currently represents a third of all domain registrations in France with over 2.1 million names registered and the number is growing rapidly.
