CoCCA Announces new Registration Policy

As of November 7, 2011, CoCCA (Council of Country Code Administrators), the registry provider for the ccTLDs .AF, .CX, .GS, .GY, .HT, .KI, .MS, .NF and .SB will amend the registration policies enforcing registry activation and confirmation.

On registration, renewal or change of registrant (i.e. change of ownership), the administrative contact or registrant will be sent two emails from the registry. One will be a "welcome" message from the sponsoring organization that advises the registrant of their rights and responsibilities as well as the contact information of their registrar; the second will be an "activation" email with a link that the recipient must click on to;

a.) accept the TLD Registrant Agreement and AUP (Acceptable Use Policy)

b.) confirm the validity of contact details provided by the registrar or reseller to the registry.

On renewal or change of registrant the policy must again be accepted and the contact details confirmed within 21 days or the domain will be suspended.

.IN crosses the 1 million registration mark!

.IN surpassed the 1 million registration mark in October 2011. The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) published the statistics, stating that the 1 million registrations included the second level domains, org.in, ac.in and co.in, as well as the .in domain type. This is not a huge number considering the population of India and the fact that a fair percentage of registrants are not from India. Nonetheless, it is still an exciting landmark for the TLD.

In early 2005, INRegistry, the Registry for .IN, had enabled all individuals and legal entities, to register .IN domain names without the need for any local presence. Under NIXI, the INRegistry functions as an autonomous body with primary responsibility for maintaining the .IN ccTLD and ensures its operational stability, reliability, and security. It implements the various elements of new policies set out by the Government of India and its Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

In November 2009, the number of registrations was 550,000 and in less than two years this number has doubled. The potential for further growth is enormous as the growth of India’s economy over the past decade has intensified facilitating the country’s information technology market.

Although India’s economy has grown substantially in the last decade, the technology infrastructure and the economy have not grown at the same rate. India boasts the third highest number of Internet users in the world, with 100 million people online, but this is only a relatively small 8% of the overall population. The country has over 800 million users of mobile phones, about 70% of the population and over 38 million social network users (an increase of over 12 million in the last 6 months).

It is expected that India, with its current economic growth rate will soon become a fore-runner in the information technology market. At the moment India has the third highest internet users in the world after China and the United States of America.

Celebrating 25 years of .DE!

On 5 November 2011, the German Top Level Domain .DE celebrated its 25th anniversary. It is the largest country code TLD with more than 14.6 million registered domains and about 3,000 new ones added daily. Furthermore it receives more than 7 billion name server queries per day. Dimensions that go beyond the imagination of even the most visionary Internet pioneer and that have fundamentally changed social and economic communication habits within only a quarter of a century. .DE has been elected by the Internet community as the TLD with the best brand image in 2010.

With more than 14.6 million registrations .DE currently has the most registrations in comparison with other country-specific top-level domains, followed by Great Britain (.UK) with around 9.7 million registered domains and the Netherlands (.NL) with 4.7 million registered domains. 25 years after the introduction of .DE, every sixth German has his own website under .DE. Furthermore, nearly 80 percent of all .DE domain holders are private persons.

.DE marked the emergence of the information technology 25 years ago in Germany on 5 November 1986 - when it was registered in the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) database. With this entry, domains with the country code for Germany were permitted to be registered for the first time in history. Nowadays every second about 100,000 times an Internet address ending with .DE is called up from somewhere in the world.

During the first ten years, administration and DNS service for .DE were provided by universities. Only in 1988, a German institution, the University of Dortmund, took over administration and care of the first six .DE domains (dbp.de, rmi.de, telenet.de, uka.de, uni-dortmund.de and uni-paderborn.de). In 1993, a foundation was established through the initiative of the then three German Internet Service Providers, the "Interessenverbund Deutsches Network Information Center (IV-DENIC)" to put out to tender the operation of the nationwide name server service. By 1994 the domain inventory had increased to about 1,000 domains and the tasks of the Deutsches Network Information Center (DENIC) were transferred to the data center of Karlsruhe. The number of domains reached 20,000 in 1996. DENIC also was the first country code registry that started to run its name server network completely independently in 2003. And in 2004, the Cooperative was one of the first TLDs that included IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names) in their character set permitted for domain names.

By 2011 more than 200,000 second level domains under .DE are currently signed, the most renowned of them is paypal.de. According to a McKinsey study published in May 2011, the Internet sector as a key industry generates 3.2 percent of the German gross domestic product and thus – not only due to a growth rate of 24 percent in the last five years – has become a more important economic factor than the energy industry or agriculture. Even after 25 years .DE is and remains a critical element of this success.

The Sunrise period for .XXX ends in grand success!

With more than 80,000 requests for domain names registered by October 31, 2011, the first phases of .XXX ended with startling success. The next phase, the Landrush period, will start on November 8 until November 25, 2011, while General Availability will kick off on December 6, 2011.

Landrush is designed for those members of the adult Sponsored Community that want to secure premium .XXX domain names and guarantees either member the chance to purchase premium .XXX domain names or be involved in a closed auction to bid for .XXX domain names.

The .XXX was launched by ICM Registry (the registry for .XXX) on September 7, 2011 after being approved by ICANN in San Francisco on March 18, 2011.

The first phase or the Sunrise period was to initially end on October 28, 2011, but with the overwhelming demand it received, the ICM Registry extended the deadline by 3 more days.

On October 24, ICM Registry announced in a statement that it had already received over 42,000 requests, more than five times what was expected. A week later the Sunrise period ended with nearly double that amount. ICM reported that 78,938 trademarked and/or pre-owned names were submitted, while 1,524 other names were allocated as part of their Founders Program.
The two stages;

1.    Land Rush, which opens on Tuesday, November 8th, 2011, is a restricted 17-day period set aside for members of the adult Sponsored Community who want to secure premium .XXX domain names. They will have a chance to either buy them outright or (in cases of multiple applicants for the same name) to participate in a closed mini-auction where they can bid for the names.

2.    General Availablity, which opens on Wednesday, December 6, 2011, the. XXX will be open to all, according to the principle "first come, only served". This means domain names with only one application will be simply awarded while those with two or more applications will proceed to a closed mini-auction between the respective applicants.
